Xaxxon Technologies a company based out of Vancouver, Canada specializes in “open-source robotics, with open-hardware electronics”. If you visit their Twitter page you’ll see that the company’s founder Colin Anderson has dubbed himself Chief Imaginator at Xaxxon. Anderson who graduated from Carleton University with a degree in Industrial Design, has put together a really impressive package with the “Oculus Surveillance and Telepresence Netbook Robot”. The Oculus is an open source motorized robotic platform that allows one to clamp a netbook onto the platform so that it can be controlled remotely using the wireless connection inside the home. It’s a similar concept to the TurtleBot but instead of using the iRobot Create and Microsoft Kinect it uses a custom rig with an Asus Xtion Pro Live gesture recognition camera. Below is a video of the Oculus with the Asus device from the Xaxxon website.
If you’re as impressed as I am you should head on over to their Kickstarter Page and contribute. This is a really great project and by using Kickstarter I have a feeling that Xaxxon may see great results.
